As my weight loss accountability coaching clients will tell you, one of my favourite sayings (some might say most overused, but whatever đ) is that “perfect is the enemy of good“.
And, if thereâs one thing that makes the biggest difference in weight loss and fitness, itâs consistency. Not perfection. Not starting over every Monday. Not following a flawless routine for two weeks before it falls apart. Just showing up, regularly enough, with good-enough effort, is often the thing that gets you the weight loss results you want.
A lot of people get stuck in the all-or-nothing mindset. They go in with the best intentions, start a new plan, go hard for a few days, then hit a busy week, lose momentum, and stop altogether. This cycle of starting and stopping doesnât just slow progress, it’s exhausting and demotivating.
So instead of trying to be perfect, aim to be consistent. You donât need to hit 100 percent every day â you just need to stop quitting altogether.
You donât have to be perfect
Perfection sounds good on paper, but itâs rarely sustainable in real life. Life is busy, unpredictable, and full of competing priorities â work, family, social plans, travel, and everything in between. Trying to stick to the perfect meal plan, training schedule, and sleep routine can work for a week or two, but at some point real life gets in the way.
The good news is, you donât need perfect days to make progress. You just need enough good days to tip the balance in your favour.
A less-than-ideal workout is still better than none. A higher-calorie meal doesnât undo your whole week. Missing one gym session doesnât mean youâve failed. Itâs the bigger picture that matters.
This is why I always emphasise building habits that work in the long term. Routines you can stick to even when life isnât going smoothly â because letâs face it, those weeks come around more often than weâd like.
Why consistency works
Hereâs what happens when you stay consistent over time â even if your efforts arenât perfect:
- You build momentum
- Your habits become automatic
- You stop relying on motivation alone
- You create a routine that feels normal, not forced
- You make steady, sustainable progress
Itâs like saving money. You donât need to deposit your entire paycheque all at once. A little bit saved regularly builds up far more than occasional big deposits followed by nothing. The same goes for fitness and fat loss. A few good choices each day add up over weeks and months.
When you commit to a consistent approach â even if you miss a day or two â youâll still make progress because youâre always moving in the right direction.
Stop and start is what slows you down
One of the biggest issues I see as an online personal trainer and online fitness coach is people believing they need to start over every time they slip up. But the real problem isnât the slip-up â itâs the belief that the only solution is to stop completely and restart later.
Imagine if you missed a single day of brushing your teeth and decided to give up on dental care altogether. Sounds ridiculous, right? But thatâs how many people treat healthy eating or exercise.
Stopping and starting not only wastes time â it often sets you back. You lose the momentum youâve built, the habits you were forming start to fade, and the mental toll of feeling like youâre constantly failing can be heavy.
Build routines that actually fit your life
This is exactly why my weight loss coaching focuses on routines that work in your real life â not a fantasy version of it. We look at your schedule, stress levels, energy, and responsibilities, then find ways to make consistent habits work with what youâve got.
Some weeks you might train three times. Some weeks it might only be one or two. Thatâs OK. You donât need to be perfect every week â you just need to keep going.
The same applies to food. You donât have to eat like a nutritionist every day. If you can eat well most of the time and have a few strategies for the more social or stressful days, youâre on the right track.
Consistency gives you flexibility
Being consistent doesnât mean doing the same thing every day. It means showing up regularly, adjusting when needed, and not giving up when things arenât perfect.
When you have consistent habits in place, you can be more flexible. You donât need to panic if a week gets busy or a few meals go off plan â because youâve built the skills and mindset to get back on track without guilt or drama.
It also takes the pressure off. You stop feeling like you have to be âon a planâ all the time. You start to trust yourself more, because youâve seen what happens when you just keep going.
Coaching that helps you stay consistent
Whether youâre aiming to lose weight, build strength, or just feel better in your body, youâll benefit from a coaching approach that keeps things consistent â even when life gets messy.
My support as an online fitness coach, and as a weight loss coach, is all about helping you stay on track without falling into the trap of perfection. We focus on whatâs realistic, what works for you, and how to make steady progress without constant resets.
You donât have to do everything right. You just have to keep doing something.
