As a weight loss coach and personal trainer, one of the biggest mistakes I see people make is comparing their body to somebody else’s too much. We look at elite athletes, fitness influencers or even other people in the gym and assume that if we train the same way, we’ll eventually look exactly the same.
I understand that feeling myself. I’m 51, I’d like to think I’m in above-average shape for my age, and you can hopefully tell that I cycle, run and lift weights. I’ve got lean, muscular legs and a fairly athletic build. But I don’t have the shredded six-pack you often see on social media, and I probably never will. Sometimes it’s easy to compare yourself with younger coaches or naturally lean people online, but over the years I’ve realised that’s the wrong comparison to make.
That’s where something called the Swimmer’s Body Illusion comes in. It explains why we often assume that training creates a particular body shape, when in reality our genetics play a much bigger role than most people realise.
What Is the Swimmer’s Body Illusion?
The Swimmer’s Body Illusion is the mistaken belief that the typical swimmer’s physique is created by swimming. In truth, most elite swimmers had the physical traits of a swimmer before they ever stepped into a pool. They are often tall, lean, and broad-shouldered with long limbs. These features give them an edge in the water and are part of the reason they stuck with swimming and became good at it.
This concept is sometimes called the Swimmer’s Body Paradox, but it is better described as an illusion or bias. It applies across many sports and fitness trends. People assume the training creates the body when in fact the body often comes first.
The Role of Genetics in Sport, Body Composition and Fitness
We all start from a different genetic blueprint. Some people build muscle almost by accident. Others store fat more readily, or seem to stay lean without trying. Shoulder width, hip width, limb length, bone structure, even where your muscles attach, all of that shapes how your physique looks, even between two people doing the exact same training and eating the exact same food. Everyone’s body composition is different.
It’s the same story with performance. Lung capacity, oxygen efficiency, muscle fibre type, all of it nudges people toward the sports that suit them. Look at elite marathon runners (light, efficient frames), bodybuilders (broad shoulders, narrow waists, a knack for building muscle), or cyclists (climbers built light, sprinters built powerful). Every one of them trains relentlessly, but genetics had a hand in pointing them toward the discipline they’d thrive in.
Here’s why that matters for you: it’s not an excuse, it’s context. Once you know your starting point isn’t the same as anyone else’s, you stop measuring yourself against the wrong ruler. Some people respond faster to training than others. That doesn’t make your effort worth less, it just means your version of “best” was never going to look identical to someone else’s.
Your body can still change, a lot. Almost everyone gets leaner, stronger and fitter with consistent training and decent nutrition. But the aim was never to look like somebody else. It’s to build the best version of what you’ve actually got.
Why Comparing Yourself Is So Misleading
Social media has made the Swimmer’s Body Illusion even stronger. Every day we’re shown professional athletes, fitness influencers and people whose careers revolve around looking exceptional.
What we don’t see are the genetics, the years of training, the careful nutrition, the lighting, the editing and, in some cases, the performance-enhancing drugs. We simply compare ourselves with the finished product.
A much healthier comparison is with yourself six months ago or last year. Are you fitter? Stronger? Healthier? More confident? Those are the comparisons that actually matter.
Body Type Labels: Ectomorph, Mesomorph, Endomorph
You might have heard of body types like ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. These are part of an old classification system called somatotypes:
- Ectomorph: naturally slim with long limbs and little body fat
- Mesomorph: more muscular and athletic, gains muscle easily
- Endomorph: rounder frame, more likely to store fat
These labels can help you understand broad patterns, but they are not scientific or fixed. Most people are a blend. You might be lean in some areas and carry fat in others. You might build muscle quickly in your legs but not in your upper body. My family trait is that we tend to have a bit of a double chin, and I swear that no matter how lean I get, I still end up with a bit of one! 😄
The somatotype model is not useless, but it is not reliable as a training guide on its own. It is a simplified way of describing genetic trends. Some ectomorphs can get strong. Some endomorphs can run marathons. Most people fall somewhere in between.
What matters more is identifying your own tendencies and adjusting your training to suit. Do not get stuck in a label. Use it as a rough guide if it helps, then move on.
What the Swimmer’s Body Paradox or Bias Means for Weight Loss
The Swimmer’s Body Illusion can cause real confusion when it comes to weight loss. People often look at athletes or lean individuals and assume their bodies are the direct result of their training or diet. But just like with sport, genetics play a huge role in how easily someone loses fat or stays lean.
Some people have faster metabolisms (although the difference is often smaller than people think). Some feel full more easily. Some store less fat around the stomach or hips. Others might eat healthily and train consistently but still find weight loss a slow and frustrating process. It is not always about effort. Sometimes it is about how your body is wired.
This illusion leads people to believe they are doing something wrong if their results do not match someone else’s. But they might just be comparing themselves to someone with a very different starting point. That does not mean you cannot make progress. It just means your journey might take a different route or pace.
You can still lose weight, improve your health, and feel better in your clothes. It just helps to understand that your results will not look exactly like someone else’s. And they do not have to.
Should You Even Bother If It Is All Pre-Determined?
If your results are shaped by genetics, is it even worth trying? If you cannot look like a sprinter or a marathon runner, why bother?
Because you are not training for someone else’s life. You are training for your own.
You do not need elite genetics to get strong, lose weight, feel confident, or perform better than you did last year. You can set goals based on progress, not perfection. You can take pride in improving your fitness even if the top step of the podium is not realistic.
Most people are not trying to be Olympians. They want more energy, better sleep, a stronger heart, or a bit of muscle tone. You do not need perfect DNA for that. You just need to show up, keep going, and work with what you have.
Your goal shouldn’t be to have somebody else’s body. It should be to build the healthiest, strongest and leanest version of the body you were given. Fitness is not about chasing an ideal body type. It is about finding your own best.
